Book Editing Associates
One of the most common mistakes a debut author can make is to think they do not need an editor. I found a great one via this network of freelancers. You submit a sample of your work and receive bids from several editors who specialize in your genre. Pick the one that suits you best and roll with it. I can’t recommend this service enough.

WritersMarket.com
The definitive list of publishers, magazines, and literary agents. You can either buy the massive book each year or sign up for a subscription to the website. I prefer the website, as it has the most current information. You can save agents’ or publishers’ names in folders, keep track of your submissions, and more.

Nathan Bransford’s Blog
This is THE best blog about the publishing industry (as far as I’m concerned). Take a peek, bookmark, and engage in reader discussion. You won’t be sorry.

Publisher’s Marketplace
Often times literary agents do not have their own website. Most of them do, however, have a mini-site on Publisher’s Marketplace. Look here for submission guidelines.

Query Shark
If you’re unsure about your query letter, send it over to Query Shark and have it slashed to bits. Warning: not for the faint of heart...
